The Author

Jim West worked at the USGS Map Store for nine years helping hundreds of people find the maps they wanted. As an instructor in the Colorado Mountain Club’s Wilderness Trekking School, he taught map and compass skills to new hikers.

He is an avid hiker and backpacker and with his wife, Ann, has hiked all overthe Rocky Mountains and the Canyonlands,and in Alaska, the Alps,the Andes, the Himalayas,New Zealand, andTanzania—always with his map.
